SALT LAKE CITY — Waterford singlehandedly dominated the singles game to hold off Rowland Hall for its third Class 3A boys tennis state title for the third consecutive season.

The Ravens' win is the third time in four years they've won the state tennis title. The only non-winning result in that span was 2020, and that season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year's title was anything but easy, though.

Lalith Suresh took the No. 1 singles title with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rowland Hall's Jaiden Handlon, and Jeffrey Kulsomphob added the No. 2 singles championship with a 6-0, 6-1 win over teammate Daniel McNally.

That meant that when Dawson Jenkins cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Juab's Levi Covington, Waterford had clinched the team title — barely.

Rowland Hall rallied from a pair of first-set losses to take both doubles titles through No. 1 tandem Noah Edgar and Auden Bown and No. 2 duo Luca Bressloff and Zach Klein. But it left the Winged Lions four points short of the team championship.

The Ravens clinched their 10th title in school history, a run that goes back to three-in-a-row from the 2005-07 season for the Sandy-based private school.

In the 5A tournament also held at Liberty Park, Skyline's Michael Cherchio held on for a 6-3, 7-6 semifinal victory on the fourth tiebreaker before cruising to a 6-3, 6-4 win in second singles and help the Eagles hold off rival Brighton for their third state championship in four seasons (five years).

Skyline teammate Gunnar Wollar took the third singles' championship with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Orem's Solomon Jones, and Sam Stewart and Drew Waldrop took second singles honors with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Olympus' George Goodson and Jake Fankhauser.
