For lovers of all things scary, spooky, or pumpkin-related, this is the most magical time of the year. But under current circumstances, you might be wondering if it's still safe to enjoy those time-honored fall traditions.

Though the pandemic may have changed a lot of things this year, that doesn't mean you can't find ways of entertaining yourself this Halloween season — especially if it's outside. With fewer restrictions and more opportunities for social distancing, an outdoor adventure may be just what your family needs. (Just don't forget a nice, warm blanket!)

Here are six hauntingly fun outdoor activities you can safely enjoy together.

BooLights at Hogle Zoo

You can count on Hogle Zoo to offer up some not-so-scary entertainment for people of all ages. This year, BooLights is back—and the zoo promises it's just the escape you need from the doom and gloom of 2020.

Take a spooky moonlit train ride, take a walk through the Bat Cave, and meet up with some familiar faces in the wizarding world-themed maze. Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes while they enjoy the yummy Beastro treats and sounds of the Zoo after dark.

For more information about ticketing and park hours, visit Hogle Zoo's website.

WitchFest at Gardner Village

If WitchFest is part of your October tradition, you'll be happy to know it has returned—even if it looks a little different. This year, your favorite brouhaha includes a touch-free scavenger hunt, Witches Night Out, and of course, shops brimming with fabulous festive finds.

All WitchFest events will be modified and adapted to encourage social distancing and masks will be required. Entrants are encouraged to "be a good witch and maintain one broomstick length away from all other witches."

'Scary Hill' at Cherry Hill

Cherry Hill (a.k.a. "The greatest fun spot you'll ever know") is turning in its waterpark fun for some harmless (but equally fun) haunts. At "Scary Hill," hundreds of skeletons will greet you on the boneyard tractor ride, the Jungle Maze is decked out in festive themes, and every hole of the miniature golf course has a spooky surprise. And when you're done having fun, stop by the Pie Pantry for a tasty fall treat!

Fall Festival at Cross E Ranch

Over the years, the best-kept secret in Salt Lake County has become increasingly popular. Cross E Ranch has virtually every festive fall activity you could think of, including a corn maze, hayrides, pumpkins, mega slides, a country store, and good food.

If you haven't heard.... Our Fall Festival means Apple Cider Donuts!!! Yes! They are back and it's been a year! I know...

Visitors are required to wear masks and capacity is limited to meet county regulations. So get your tickets before they sell out—and don't forget to buy the apple cider donuts!

CLAS Ropes Course Halloween Cruise

An adventure that caters to both the young and the young at heart, CLAS Ropes Course's Halloween Cruise entertained thousands of visitors last year—and this year, it could be your turn.

Aboard the cruise boat, you'll hear some scary stories from the captain while you take in 100 hand-carved jack-o-lanterns and munch on concessions. You can also enjoy a movie before or after your cruise. Just watch out for pirates!

Pumpkin patches galore

Of course, the classic go-to fall activity is the traditional Halloween pumpkin patch, but there are too many to choose from. To locate a pumpkin patch near you, click here. Be sure to check each location's website or social media pages to stay up-to-date on COVID-19 restrictions and requirements.
