Wildfire Updates: Cottonwood Trail Fire's spread 'slowed significantly'; southbound I-15 reopened

SALT LAKE CITY — Here are the latest updates on the wildfires burning across Utah.

The Cottonwood Trail Fire burned an estimated 3,000 acres in Washington County on Sunday evening. Evacuations were ordered and later lifted for Harrisburg; homes in the Angel Heights subdivision west of I-15 in Leeds remained evacuated as of 10:15 p.m. and the Silver Reef subdivision was threatened.

Drivers in Washington County should expect congestion and delays as the freeway reopens after being closed while crews battle the blaze, according to UDOT. See below for more information on the delays.

Southbound I-15 open, significant delays still expected

Southbound I-15 is open again, UDOT officials reported on Twitter. There is still five miles of congestion and drivers should expect 90 minutes of delays in the area as firefighters continue to work on the Cottonwood Trail Fire.For up-to-date traffic info, check the UDOT Traffic app or the Waze app.

Cottonwood Trail Fire's spread 'slowed significantly'

The Cottonwood Trail Fire's spread has "slowed significantly" as winds decreased Sunday night, according to Mike Melton, fire management officer for Utah's Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands in southern Utah.The fire is still estimated to be around 3,000 acres as of 9:30 p.m. Evacuations orders are still in place for the Angel Heights subdivision in west Leeds and Red Cliffs Campground. The Silver Reef subdivision in Leeds is threatened.Four hand crews and 20 engines are still working on the fire, according to Melton. One firefighter was injured earlier in the evening from smoke inhalation, but he was treated and released from the hospital. One vehicle was destroyed by the fire but no additional injuries were reported.— Tracie Snowder, KSL.com

Harrisburg evacuation order lifted; Cottonwood Trail Fire 10% contained

The evacuation order for Harrisburg has been lifted, according to Mike Melton, fire management officer for Utah's Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands in southern Utah.The Angel Heights subdivision in west Leeds is still under an evacuation order.The Cottonwood Trail Fire, which is estimated at 3,000 acres, is 10% contained, according to Melton. Northbound I-15 reopened in Washington County; Red Cross opens evacuation and cooling center

TrafficNorthbound I-15 is open again after being closed due to the quick-moving Cottonwood Trail Fire. Southbound I-15 remains closed and there is still a two-hour delay.Traffic updates can be checked on UDOT Traffic's Twitter page, the UDOT Traffic app and the Waze app.EvacuationsEvacuations are in place for Silver Reef and Leeds, the American Red Cross of Utah reported on Twitter. Red Cross has opened a cooling and evacuation center located at the Washington County Fairgrounds Grafton Building, 5500 W. 339 South in Hurricane, for anyone affected by the fire.

WASHINGTON COUNTY — Evacuations have been ordered for the town of Harrisburg and homes west of I-15 in Leeds due to the Cottonwood Trail Fire, fire officials reported on Twitter.Drivers on I-15 near the fire should expect major delays as crew battle the blaze, according to UDOT.Southbound I-15 is closed at Exit 27 to state Route 17 and drivers should expect a two-hour delay on the detour.Northbound I-15 is closed at Exit 16 to state Route 9 and there is a one-hour travel delay.Drivers can check updates on the UDOT Traffic app or the Waze app.More information will be posted as it becomes available.— Tracie Snowder, KSL.com

Cottonwood Trail Fire burns estimated 2,000 acres; Red Cliffs Campground under evacuation

The Cottonwood Trail Fire has burned an estimated 2,000 acres just hours after sparking and is 0% contained, according to Mike Melton, fire management officer for Utah's Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands in southern Utah.Red Cliffs Campground in Hurricane is under evacuation orders.Multiple agencies have responded to the fire, including 30 engines, three large air tankers and four helicopters. One firefighter was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation.The fire was caused by a blown tire on I-15 near Harrisburg, Melton reported, but no additional details were given. Cottonwood Trail Fire jumps I-15; officials close Old Highway 91 at Leeds

The fast-moving Cottonwood Trail Fire, which started near southbound I-15 at Exit 27, jumped I-15 into the median and then crossed over to Old Highway 91 near Harrisburg, according to officials from Iron County's Emergency Response team. The fire in Washington County that has closed Interstate 15 is being called the Cottonwood Trail Fire. It started Sunday afternoon and has burned 1,000 acres, fire officials reported on Twitter.The fire is being spread by 15-20 mph winds. Wildfire closes I-15 betwen Washington City and Leeds in Washington County

A new fire in Washington County has closed southbound I-15 at Exit 27 to state Route 17 and northbound I-15 at Exit 16, UDOT officials reported on Twitter.Drivers should expect a 30-minute delay. Big Summit Fire evacuations lifted in Hamlin Valley

Road closures and evacuations stemming from the Big Summit Fire, which is burning across the Utah-Nevada border into Iron County, have been lifted Sunday morning, fire officials said.The fire is burning near Hamlin Valley; officials encouraged residents to exercise caution while returning to the area.

#BigSummitFire road closures and evacuations in Hamlin Valley have now been lifted. Roads include Spanish George, Arrowhead and Eightmile. Property owners are able to access their property and should use caution while fire equipment is still in the area.

Pole Canyon Fire now 93% contained

The Pole Canyon Fire, burning in western Utah County, is now 93% contained and will be transitioned back to home unit firefighters Sunday evening, fire officials said.
