Trump wears mask in public for first time during pandemic

President Donald Trump wore a mask during a visit to a military hospital on Saturday, the first time the president has been seen in public with the type of facial covering recommended by health officials as a precaution against spreading or becoming infected by the novel coronavirus. Trump flew by helicopter to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in suburban Washington to meet wounded servicemembers and health care providers caring for COVID-19 patients. As he left the White House, he told reporters: “When you're in a hospital, especially ... I think it’s a great thing to wear a mask." — Associated Press

Disney World reopens as coronavirus cases surge in Florida

“The Most Magical Place on Earth” has reopened after nearly four months with new rules in place to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom are reopening Saturday, while Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios will follow four days later. “It's the chance to come back and be in the magic,” said Diane Watkins, a preschool teacher from Helena, Alabama, who visits the park about eight times a year. “Hot or not, mask or not, we’re just happy to be here. I feel like everybody here is in the same frame of mind. Everybody is just so excited to be here.” — Associated Press

Amid pandemic, many value control over their vacation: Are RVs the answer?

Utahns eager to find alternatives to vacations that heighten the risk of exposure to coronavirus are turning to recreational vehicle rentals in droves, spilling into RV parks for socially distant vacations. Tempted by the level of control they offer, first time RVers — people who’ve never rented or owned an RV before — in particular are trying it out, according to Kampgrounds of America Vice President of Communications Mike Gast. “A phenomenal amount of people — and most of those first timers — are flocking to rent RVs from other people and give that lifestyle a try or have decided that’s going to be their vacation this year,” Gast said. “We are seeing a huge bump in business right now.” — Sahalie Donaldson, KSL

Doggy deliveries help Colombians shop during pandemic

Eight-year-old Eros trots through the streets of this hilly city several times a day with a straw basket in his jaws, taking vegetables, fruit and packaged foods to customers of the El Porvenir mini-market. The chocolate Labrador retriever is paid with treats and massages of his furry head. “He helps us to maintain social distancing” says Eros’ owner Maria Natividad Botero. “And people love it when we send the dog.” — Associated Press

632 new COVID-19 cases, 5 new deaths announced Saturday

The Utah Department of Health reported 632 new COVID-19 cases and five new deaths Saturday. The new cases bring Utah's total confirmed case count to 28,855, with 1,797 total hospitalizations and 212 deaths. Friday, the total was 28,223 confirmed cases as a record-breaking 867 new cases were announced. Saturday's numbers bring the state's total estimate of active COVID-19 cases to 11,958, up from 11,756 active cases on Friday. An estimated 16,897 cases are considered recovered, as those people were diagnosed with the disease three or more weeks ago and have not died. Two-hundred and three patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, up from 182 hospitalizations on Friday. Coronavirus deaths take a long-expected turn for the worse

A long-expected upturn in U.S. coronavirus deaths has begun, driven by fatalities in states in the South and West, according to data on the pandemic. The number of deaths per day from the virus had been falling for months, and even remained down as states like Florida and Texas saw explosions in cases and hospitalizations — and reported daily U.S. infections broke records several times in recent days. “It's consistently picking up. And it's picking up at the time you'd expect it to," said William Hanage, a Harvard University infectious diseases researcher. According to an Associated Press analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University, the seven-day rolling average for daily reported deaths in the U.S. has increased from 578 two weeks ago to 664 on July 10 — still well below the heights hit in April. Daily reported deaths increased in 27 states over that time period, but the majority of those states are averaging under 15 new deaths per day. A smaller group of states has been driving the nationwide increase in deaths. —Associated Press

Donald Trump Jr.: Mask mandates are a 'states' rights' issue

Donald Trump Jr. said Friday the president believes it’s up to Gov. Gary Herbert and leaders of other states to make decisions about whether making face masks mandatory is the best way to keep from reverting back to previous restrictions on public activity as COVID-19 cases continue to increase. “If there is a spike in Utah, then maybe that is for the governor to decide,” Trump Jr. told KSL in a Trump Victory conference call with reporters from around the country when asked about Herbert’s plea Thursday that Utahns either wear masks voluntarily or face a mandate or rolling back the state’s recent reopening. President Donald Trump has “gone along with that and he’s gone along with that not just with Republican governors but with Democrat governors across the country. So I think we believe in those states’ rights. I believe that’s a big issue in Utah,” Trump Jr. said. —Lisa Riley Roch, KSL

"A multisystem disease': How coronavirus affects the entire body

Coronavirus damages not only the lungs, but the kidneys, liver, heart, brain and nervous system, skin and gastrointestinal tract, doctors said Friday in a review of reports about COVID-19 patients. The team at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City — one of the hospitals flooded with patients in the spring — went through their own experiences and collected reports from other medical teams around the world. Their comprehensive picture shows the coronavirus attacks virtually every major system in the human body, directly damaging organs and causing the blood to clot, the heart to lose its healthy rhythm, the kidneys to shed blood and protein and the skin to erupt in rashes. It causes headaches, dizziness, muscle aches, stomach pain and other symptoms along with classic respiratory symptoms like coughing and fever. —CNN

Utah saw a record-breaking number of COVID-19 cases at 867 on Friday, with two new reported deaths.

Utah’s hospitals haven’t been impacted quite as badly as other states with recent COVID-19 case upticks, but that’s not to say it couldn't be the same story in a few weeks. And as Utah continues to report COVID-19 cases at ever-increasing rates, there’s a growing concern that the storm health experts fear will soon make landfall.

Utah’s rise in COVID-19 cases has continued for well over a month now, and with it the number of hospitalizations from the coronavirus has increased, as well.
