SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah’s state epidemiologist is warning state leaders that a rapid spread of the coronavirus could force hospitals to run out of intensive care beds next month and may require reinstating some restrictions that were lifted last month. In a memo sent Friday, epidemiologist Angela Dunn wrote to state leaders including Republican Gov. Gary Herbert that the state is getting to the point where the only option to manage spread and prevent deaths is a complete shutdown. Herbert's office said in a statement he shares Dunn's concerns and leaders are meeting this week to discuss how to address the surge in cases.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City police are investigating after a mural of George Floyd was reportedly vandalized over the weekend. Sgt. Keith Horrocks said Monday that a tar-like black substance was poured over the painting sometime Sunday morning. He said the mural was repainted before officers could collect evidence. He says investigators are searching for nearby security cameras and asking for the public’s help with information. Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz were among those who expressed anger over the vandalism.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. (AP) — The Navajo Department of Health reported 55 new cases of coronavirus on the Navajo Nation on Monday, but no additional deaths. That pushes the total of positive COVID-19 cases to 7,045 with the death toll remaining at 335. Tribal officials also say preliminary reports from 11 health care facilities indicate about 3,716 people have recovered from COVID-19 with one hospital report still pending. The Navajo Nation has resumed weekend lockdowns with businesses closed as the number of coronavirus cases off the reservation increases, most notably in Arizona. The tribe’s vast reservation stretches into northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico and southeastern Utah.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Brigham Young University police are searching for the people who vandalized an on-campus statue of Brigham Young. The Daily Herald reported campus Police Lt. Rich Christianson says surveillance video indicated there were two suspects involved but police are still investigating. Police say the vandals poured red, latex paint over the front of the statue in Provo between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. June 15. The word "racist” was written in spray paint across the pedestal beneath the statue of the university’s namesake. The suspects face potential criminal mischief charges for the estimated $1,000 in damages.
