Answers to questions about new coronavirus antibody studies

Studies have begun to emerge that try to determine how many Americans have been infected by the new coronavirus. But are they accurate? The results depend on where and how the research is done, and it can be difficult to draw firm conclusions from the early findings, experts said. For instance, a study in New York state, one of the nation's most infected, estimated that the true number of infections is about 10 times the official count. In Santa Clara County, California, which includes San Jose, research indicated infections were at least 50 times greater. Signs of caring, recognition: West High teachers deliver yard signs to graduating seniors

West High School teacher Kathy Barnard reached out to students in an unconventional way Thursday, planting personalized yard signs in front of the homes of graduating seniors. “There was one girl who cried. There were a few whose families just celebrated them. A lot of them were sleeping in but it was really nice to see them and let them know they’re not forgotten and that they are recognized and celebrated in this time when we’re all alone and isolated in our houses, that they aren’t forgotten,” said Barnard. The soft closure of Utah schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic was announced on March 13 and has been extended until the end of the academic year. Salt Lake County: Data encouraging, still too early to ease restrictions

Salt Lake County’s social distancing measures have helped slow the spread of COVID-19, according to data released by county leaders. While the metrics used to gauge the extent of the virus’s spread were encouraging, county officials said it was still too early to ease restrictions. “We have a lot of success to date, but we have a long way to go,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. The county was asking people to continue to wear facemasks while out in public or heading to stores and to avoid large gatherings. “The more we do that, the sooner we can go back, and the more confidence we will have,” Wilson said. — Jed Boal, KSL TV

166 new COVID-19 cases, 2 deaths reported in Utah on Saturday

The Utah Department of Health updated the state's novel coronavirus numbers Saturday afternoon, revealing 166 new cases and two new deaths from COVID-19. That brings Utah to 3,948 total cases and 41 deaths from the disease, up from 3,782 cases on Friday. The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease, and those who have died. The state has conducted at least 90,206 tests for COVID-19, and 329 Utahns have reportedly been hospitalized for it. — Graham Dudley, KSL.com

Millions of people face stimulus check delays for a strange reason: they're poor

Last week, a group of angry and desperate Citi Tax Financial customers gathered outside the company’s storefront in Augusta, Georgia. Millions of Americans had received a big deposit from the IRS in their bank accounts, but they had not. The IRS website told them their coronavirus stimulus checks were deposited in an account they didn’t recognize. With an officer from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office beside him and another officer shouting for people to be quiet, the tax preparation company’s owner told the crowd of about 60, only a few of whom wore masks, that he didn’t have their money. Because of the baroque machinery that runs the tax preparation industry, the IRS had sent the money to a bank Citi Tax works with but the customers had not heard of. That bank sent the payments back to the IRS. Citi Tax’s clients — just like some clients of big tax brands such as H&R Block, Jackson Hewitt and TurboTax — didn’t get their money for the very reason Congress wanted to get money to them quickly in the first place: They are poor. The Georgia customers, almost all black women, are among the likely millions of Americans who are having trouble getting the stimulus funds they are owed. The IRS’ difficulty in swiftly getting payments to Americans has a basic, root cause: There are multiple private actors sitting between the IRS and tax filers. — ProPublica

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 170 on Friday, with four new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health.

Stocks held steady on Friday as Wall Street ended a tumultuous week.

President Donald Trump signed a $484 billion bill Friday to aid employers and hospitals under stress from the coronavirus pandemic that has killed more than 50,000 Americans and devastated broad swaths of the economy.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert said Friday the state health department’s negotiations on a controversial contract to buy up to 200,000 doses of antimalarial drugs have “ceased.”
