HERRIMAN — A 10-year-old girl is in "extremely critical condition" Thursday afternoon after nearly drowning in a bathtub earlier that morning, police said.

The incident took place in the area of 12500 South and Moonlite Hill Court. The girl had been feeling sick and took a bath to feel better, her mother told police.

About 10 minutes later, about 11:18 a.m., the mother discovered the girl face down in the tub, Herriman Police Lt. Cody Stromberg said.

The mother immediately pulled the girl out of the tub, began CPR and called 911. Once officers and paramedics arrived, they took over chest compressions, Stromberg said.

The girl was transported via medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Hospital.

Stromberg said he didn’t know details surrounding what kind of sickness the girl had before the bath. He said the mother’s actions were “absolutely” the right thing to do and police “applaud her” for her quick thinking.

He noted that this situation is out of the ordinary since typically children of that age don’t need constant supervision when in the bath.

Stromberg added that at this point in the investigation, there’s nothing to suggest this was anything other than a terrible accident.
