SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Zion National Park officials say an endangered California condor chick has left the nest and grown wings large enough to fly for the first time in park history. The southern Utah park said in a social media post last week that a group of visitors saw the baby condor stretch its wings and leave the nest on Sept. 25. Park biologists later confirmed the sighting. The 4½-month-old chick is Zion's first successful hatchling.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — A judge has denied a defense push to dismiss charges against a Utah man accused of starting a massive 2017 wildfire near Brian Head. The Daily Herald reports Judge James Brady on Monday set the trial to begin Dec. 17 for 63-year-old defendant Robert Lyman. Lyman is charged with misdemeanor counts including reckless burning. Authorities say the blaze started when he lit a pile of branches he had cleared to make his southern Utah cabin safer from wildfire.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah health officials say vaping products containing marijuana's high-inducing ingredient, THC, are the main culprit in an outbreak that has led to 71 reported cases in the state. The new tally of cases announced in a news release Monday from the Utah Department of Health marks a significant increase from the 47 cases reported a week earlier. The agency says 10 more potential cases are being investigated.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — Monsoon season carries high hopes for rain, thunder and lightning across the US Southwest, but it failed to deliver this year. Several communities in northern Arizona had the driest monsoon season on record, including Flagstaff. The season is characterized by a shift in wind patterns and moisture being pulled in from the tropical coast of Mexico. It runs from mid-June through September.
