SALT LAKE CITY — Donovan Mitchell’s first shoe has a name (the D.O.N. Issue #1 by Adidas), multiple color schemes, and loads of celebrity endorsements (isn’t Mitchell a big enough celebrity by himself yet?).
Now it also has a commercial ... or maybe Mitchell is just making a cameo in a "Spider-Man: Far From Home" ad.
The 30-second spot was released on Tuesday, starring Mitchell and "Spider-Man: Far From Home" actors Tom Holland and (Mitchell superfan) Jake Gyllenhaal.
Oh, and it has an official release date, too. On Wednesday, Adidas announced that Mitchell's shoe would go on sale on July 1 at adidas.com and at retail stores beginning July 5.
The shoe's name is not only an acronym (Determination Over Negativity) it also is a reference to Mitchell's "Spida" nickname, as well as his love of comic books.
So it's no surprise the four colorways for the shoe are Spider-Man inspired.
The red and blue “Amazing Spider-Man” colorway will be the first one released on July 1. The pink and black “Symbiote Spider-Man” will go on sale on July 18. The black and green “Stealth Spider-Man” will be available on Aug. 1. Finally, the “Iron Spider” red and gold design will be released on Aug. 31.
The shoe will cost $100.
Naturally, the first advertisement for the shoe included a reference to Spider-Man and two of the newest stars in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Holland and Gyllenhaal, who plays Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man movie.
In the half-minute commercial’s plot, there’s a mini-caper as Holland receives a package for "Spida." Thinking it’s directed at his superhero alter ego, the actor opens the case only to see Mitchell's signature shoe.
Imagine his surprise when he finds Mitchell with the actual Spidey suit.
"Can I just have 10 more minutes?" Mitchell asks Holland.
