(AP) — There's a tie atop the AFC West after Philip Rivers led the Chargers on a dramatic comeback, beating the Chiefs with a two-point conversion last night with four seconds remaining. The 29-28 victory in Kansas City clinched a playoff spot for the Chargers, who hadn't beaten the Chiefs since 2013, the last year they made the playoffs. Both teams are now 11-3, though Kansas City has the tiebreaker with a better division record.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — There's a good chance the Philadelphia Eagles will use Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles as their starting quarterback Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Carson Wentz has a back injury. The severity is still not known. Two people familiar with the injury have confirmed reports that Wentz has a fractured vertebra, but no definitive determination has been made regarding his status, pending further evaluation. Foles hasn't taken a snap in a game since Week 2.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Andrei Vasilevskiy (vah-sihl-EHV'-skee) delivered a record-setting performance last night after sitting out a month. Tampa Bay's goalie made a career-high 48 saves in his return from a broken left foot and the Lightning beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 in a matchup of the NHL's top two teams. Vasilevskiy tied the team record for saves in a game established by Ben Bishop against Carolina on Jan. 19, 2014.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Major League Baseball's winter meetings wrapped up yesterday with a three-team trade involving Cleveland, Seattle and Tampa Bay. The deal that sends first baseman Carlos Santana back to Cleveland and moves slugger Edwin Encarnacion (ehn-kahr-nah-see-OHN') to Seattle. The Rays got infielder Yandy Diaz and minor league right-hander Cole Sulser from Cleveland, the Indians acquired first baseman Jake Bauers from Tampa Bay and the Mariners wound up with a competitive balance round B draft pick. Tampa Bay will send $5 million to Seattle and the Mariners will pay $6 million to Cleveland.
HERTFORD, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina say a fifth-grade teacher who was the daughter of baseball star Jim "Catfish" Hunter has died after falling ill during a school fire drill. The Virginian-Pilot reports that 45-year-old Kim Hunter Daugherty died yesterday of an undisclosed medical emergency at Hertford Grammar School. The newspaper reports Daugherty was the first girl in Perquimans (PUR'-kih-mihnz) County to play on the previously all-boy Little League teams. She had been a teacher for 20 years.
