PROVO — Just three days before BYU's season opener, running back KJ Hall seems to have called it quits on his Cougar career.

The son of former BYU standout Kalin Hall and ex-BYU gymnast Hollie Hall announced late Wednesday night via Instagram that he is stepping away from the program "for reasons unrelated to my physical health."

"You're never ready to move on past something that you love and have committed so much of your life to," wrote Hall, who is the older brother of BYU quarterback Jaren Hall. "But I don't want anyone to be confused; I have chosen to leave the game at this point for reasons unrelated to my physical health. That being said, I want to wish my brothers luck this week and year as they go to battle and right the ship."

Hall, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound tailback who prepped at Maple Mountain High School, played two seasons at BYU after serving a two-year church mission in Mexico City. He ran for 206 yards and one touchdown despite playing in just six games as a sophomore in 2017, including a breakout 112-yard effort against San Jose State.

But injuries curtailed his season and limited his career.

Injuries also have cut short the career of BYU running back Trey Dye, who retired medically during fall camp by head coach Kalani Sitake. Dye joined the coaching staff as a student assistant.

Ula Toluta'u, the breakout running back of the 2017 season, also left the team during the summer.

BYU will rely on senior running back Squally Canada for the 2018 season, and redshirt freshman Lopini Katoa also tops the depth chart at tailback. Former quarterback Beau Hoge recently moved to running back, and converted linebacker Riley Burt should also be in the rotation for the Cougars.
