LOGAN—Utah State’s Dax Raymond has been named to the 2017 John Mackey Award watch list. The award has been presented since 2000 to the best collegiate tight end. Raymond is the only football player from Utah to be a candidate for this award and one of only four being named to the list from the Mountain West Conference.
The 6-foot-5 tight end, who prepped at Timpview High School in Provo, is a redshirt sophomore as he redshirted during the 2016 season due to an injury. As a freshman, Raymond played in nine games and had four receptions for 72 yards. In high school, he earned all-state honors and was a Utah Valley Elite 11 player as a senior in 2012.
The John Mackey Award is one of the awards presented by the National College Football Awards Association. Fourteen previous winners of the John Mackey Award have played in the NFL, including last year’s winner Jake Butt.
The Atlantic Coast Conference has the most players on the watch list, with nine, and the Big Ten is next with seven. Louisville has a duo of tight ends on the watch list, Micky Crum and Jordan Davis.
The semifinalists will be chosen Oct. 30, leading to the final three Nov. 20. The winners of each NCFAA award will be announced Dec. 7 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
