SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Residents in Southern California's Summit Valley area have been forced out of their homes as firefighters battle a rapidly growing forest fire. A spokeswoman for the San Bernardino National Forest says the blaze began shortly after noon Sunday and quickly grew to more than a square mile in a remote area about 55 miles east of Los Angeles.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in Mexico are preparing for a newly-formed Tropical Storm Javier, which is moving over the Pacific toward the southern end of Baja California. Javier has sustained winds of about 50 mph and its center is about 210 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas. Meanwhile, mountain communities in Mexico's Puebla and Veracruz states are recovering from weekend mudslides that killed 39 people during heavy rains brought by remnants of Hurricane Earl.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Five gunmen wearing military uniforms have abducted an American and an Australian in the Afghan capital, Kabul. An Afghan security official says the two foreigners were abducted from their vehicle on a main road near the American University of Afghanistan, which they are believed to be employees. Three other foreigners who were kidnapped in Kabul in the past year have been released.

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) — A house painter is being held on $2 million bail for allegedly breaking into a home in Southampton, New York and sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman. Twenty-year-old Marvin Saul Siciliano-Nunez appeared in court over the weekend following the Friday morning attack.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is making his first public appearance Monday since being hospitalized last month with severe burns. He'll attend the groundbreaking of a nearly $900 million new harbor bridge in Corpus Christi. Abbott sustained extensive second- and third-degree burns on his lower legs and feet after being scalded July 7 while vacationing in Wyoming. His office won't say exactly how he was burned.
