Positive jobs report..."Shocking" police shooting video...Japan markings bombing anniversary

WASHINGTON (AP) — The latest jobs report features a sign of confidence among employers. They added a healthy 255,000 jobs last month, even amid sluggish growth. The numbers point to a resilient U.S. economy. The Labor Department says the unemployment rate remained a low 4.9 percent in July. More Americans launched job searches, and nearly all were hired. But the influx of job seekers meant that the number of unemployed fell only slightly.

CHICAGO (AP) — The head of Chicago's Independent Police Review Authority, the agency that investigates Chicago police misconduct, called footage of officers firing at a suspected car thief "shocking and disturbing." The video, released Friday, shows officers repeatedly firing at the car they were believed stolen, even as it sped away. There was no video of officers firing the fatal shot that hit 18-year-old Paul O'Neal in the back.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Donald Trump has endorsed House Speaker Paul Ryan. It comes after a four-day standoff that angered party insiders. Trump did it Friday night at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Ryan, like other top Wisconsin Republicans, did not attend Trump's evening appearance in their state.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan is marking the 71st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima by renewing calls for a nuclear weapons free world. Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui says world leaders should follow President Barack Obama and learn first-hand about the evils of nuclear weapons. Obama in May paid tribute to 140,000 people killed by the world's first atomic bomb attack that was dropped by the U.S. to force Japan's capitulation in World War II.

NEW YORK (AP) — A lawyer says mobster John Gotti's namesake grandson says he's seeking out treatment while jailed on a drug charge. Attorney Gerard Marrone told the Daily News of New York on Friday that the younger John Gotti is addicted to painkillers and has gone into a drug detox program at New York City's Rikers Island jail. The 23-year-old Gotti was arrested Thursday at the Queens home where his late grandfather once lived. He's charged with selling oxycodone pills.
