The proceedings concluded with the dropping of red, white and blue balloons and confetti and video images of fireworks.

Trump doubled down on the hard-line immigration policies that fired up conservatives in the primary. But he broke with many in his party by promising protections for gays and lesbians.

Campaign chairman John Podesta said Donald Trump used "more fear, more division, more anger, more hate" in his speech. Podesta said in a statement that next week's Democratic National Convention will offer a more positive vision.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The four-day Republican convention drew to a close in Cleveland Thursday night with a total of two dozen protest-related arrests. That came as a relief to city officials and police who had braced for mass disruptions and violence. Organizers of some of the rallies and marches said fears of violence kept many people away.

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago police officer is expected to survive after being shot in the leg Thursday night by a man who was killed when officers returned fire. The wounded officer, described as a 17-year veteran of the force, was taken to the hospital, where he was visited by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
