EAST BURKE, Vt. (AP) — One of the country's elite ski racing academies has announced plans to build a new $2.8 million indoor training facility on Vermont's Burke Mountain.
Burke Mountain Academy officials plan to open the state-of-the-art Ronnie Berlack Center sometime in the late fall. The facility is named after a 2012 BMA graduate who was killed in an avalanche in Austria along with a fellow U.S. Ski Team prospect in January 2015.
BMA spokeswoman Jodi Flanagan says the complex will include 6,000 square feet of turf field in addition to a 4,700-square-foot training area complete with rubberized floors and workout equipment.
Steve Berlack, Ronnie's father, says the project represents a "major milestone in BMA's history."
Donations from the BMA community will cover the facility's design, construction and first five years of operating expenses.
