BOTTINEAU, N.D. (AP) — Dakota College at Bottineau has won its ninth junior college national championship, and first in six years.
The Lumberjacks beat top seed Erie Community College of New York 4-3 in overtime on Sunday to win the National Junior College Athletic Association title in Binghamton, New York.
Phoenix McElroy-Scott got the game-winner for No. 2 seed Dakota College. He also was named tournament MVP, according to the NJCAA.
"You grow up dreaming about scoring a goal like that," McElroy-Scott told the Minot Daily News. "It was just breathtaking when it went in. Everybody went nuts. It was crazy."
Williston State College also made the final four but lost 6-1 to Erie in Saturday's semifinals.
Dakota College also won national titles in 1986, 1991, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
The stretch of years without a national title made this year's championship "a lot sweeter, for sure," coach Travis Rybchynski said.
"We're so happy to bring the title back to Bottineau," he said.
