NEW YORK (AP) — The brutal frontier saga "The Revenant" leads the 88th annual Academy Awards with 12 nominations, while the acting categories were again filled entirely by white performers. The strong showing for "The Revenant," including a best actor nod for Leonardo DiCaprio, follows its win at the Golden Globes. It sets director Alejandro Inarritu (een-YAR'-ee-too) for a possible back-to-back win following his best-picture winning "Birdman."
LOS ANGELES (AP) — No one has come forward yet to claim some of the $1.6 billion Powerball prize, but lottery officials say they know where the three lucky tickets were purchased. They say one ticket was bought at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, California. Another was bought in Munford, Tennessee, north of Memphis, and the third ticket was sold at a Publix grocery store in Melbourne Beach, Florida.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — After the bomb blasts and gunfire, bodies were sprawled on sidewalks. Police in Indonesia say today's terror attack in downtown Jakarta was probably linked to the Islamic State group, and that they were warned ahead of time. The attackers set off suicide bombs and exchanged gunfire outside a Starbucks. Police say all five attackers and two civilians were killed. Another 19 people were injured.
TOKYO (AP) — Wall Street is expected to open higher this morning, but world markets have had a rough time. Asian markets closed lower today, except for the Shanghai Composite, which rebounded nearly 2 percent. European markets also are trading lower.
LONDON (AP) — British actor Alan Rickman has died today following a battle with cancer. He was 69. Rickman played the ambiguous Dark Arts teacher Severus Snape in the "Harry Potter" films, but he also performed with Britain's Royal Shakespeare Company.
