MIDWAY — BYU's Jordan Rodgers and previous champion Darrin Overson will meet in the final match of the 2015 Utah State Amateur Championship on Saturday after both won a pair of matches Friday at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway.
Rodgers knocked off Utah State golfer Seokwon Jeon, 1 up in the semifinals of the annual tournament. Overson, who won the 1998 Utah State Am, defeated Utah golfer Brandon Kida, 1 up in the other semifinal to advance to the final round.
Rain postponed the semifinal round around 1:30 p.m., and darkness threatened on a few occasions after resuming play, but both golfers were able to get in their full matches to set up Saturday's winner-take-all match play that will tee off at 7:30 a.m.
In the quarterfinals earlier Friday, Rodgers defeated future Cougar teammate and recent Maple Mountain High standout Kai Ruiz 4 and 3. Jeon defeated John Owen 2 and 1 to set up the BYU-Utah State semifinal on one side of the bracket.
On the other end of the bracket, Kida downed Joe Parkinson 2 and 1 in his quarterfinal to advance to the final four. He faces Overson after the 1998 amateur champ defeated Charlie Duensing, 1 up.
