MIDWAY — Defending Utah State Amateur champion Jon Wright was among the 32 golfers to advance after the first round of match play at the 2015 tournament at Soldier Hollow golf course in Midway.

Wright needed two extra holes to beat Brady Stanger in match play, which saw 64 players qualify.

Past champion Darrin Overson also got off a good start. The 1998 amateur champ dropped an eight-foot putt on the first extra hole of a playoff against Jonathon Thomas to move on to the round of 32.

Utah State senior Seokwon Jeon also advanced through the first day of match play, defeating Rhett Rasmussen 4 and 3 to celebrate his 22nd birthday. BYU's Jordan Rodgers, Austin Banz, Dalton Stanger and Patrick Fishburn, as well as BYU signee Kai Ruiz, each won their first match.

Utah's Jose Pelayo, Southern Utah's Nick Booth and Weber State's Devon Purser were also among the Division I golfers who advanced to the round of 32.

Past champions Dan Horner (2008) and Nick Nelson (2007) each beat their respective opponents in the first round of match play.
