SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's first female chief of police has been fired nearly 25 years after she made history by taking the position. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Garland Mayor Scott Coleman fired Police Chief Linda Bourne, saying she failed to implement a number of reforms. She had been chief of the four-person department since 1992.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Mormons will now be able to pay their tithing online, bringing modern flair to the Biblical practice started by Abraham. The Deseret News reports that the leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say members can now use a digital system to donate a portion of their income and to help fund missionaries.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — An 18-year-old woman is expected to testify in her own defense as she faces trial in connection with a 50-mile crime spree that left a deputy dead. Prosecutors say Megan Grunwald was a willing accomplice to her boyfriend, who died in a shootout that also left a Utah County Sheriff's Deputy dead. Grunwald's attorney says she was forced to drive the vehicle.
PROVO, Utah (AP) — Researchers are trying to determine whether there is a new firefly species in Utah, and they want your help. KSL-TV reports that anyone who spots a firefly can visit a website hosted by the Natural History Museum of Utah to report details about sighting times and flash patterns. They can also drop a pin on a Google map to share the sighting's exact location.
