Lynch confirmation vote...EU leaders taking up migrant crisis...Ferguson wrongful-death lawsuit to be filed

WASHINGTON (AP) — After more than five months of delay, the Senate is set to take a confirmation vote Thursday on President Barack Obama's choice to be the next attorney general. Federal prosecutor Loretta Lynch would become the first black woman to hold the post. GOP Senate leaders had insisted on first getting through anti-trafficking legislation which was snarled by division on abortion funding. It was approved Wednesday.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. secretary-general is calling on European leaders holding an emergency summit Thursday to act swiftly to address the growing migrant crisis. At least 1,300 people have drowned in the past three weeks alone trying to make the crossing from Libya. Ban Ki-Moon says he'll also take up the issue in his audience with Pope Francis next week.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Attorneys for the parents of Michael Brown, the unarmed, black 18-year-old who was fatally shot by a white police officer in a St. Louis suburb, are heading to federal court. They say they'll file a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of Ferguson on Thursday. Brown's shooting death in August by officer Darren Wilson led to sometimes-violent protests that were erupted again when a grand jury declined to charge Wilson.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore police say investigators have interviewed five of the six officers involved in the arrest of a man who died a week later from a spinal cord injury that happened while he was in custody. The department says its internal investigation into the death of Freddie Gray will be turned over for review to prosecutors next week. The Justice Department has opened a civil rights investigation into Gray's death.

HAVANA (AP) — The NBA is the first U.S. professional league to visit sports-crazy Cuba since efforts to improve relations with Washington were initiated late last year. Basketball Is arguably Cuba's fourth most-popular sport, after baseball, boxing and soccer. Former NBA stars Steve Nash and Dikembe Mutumbo are opening a four-day training camp Thursday in Havana.
