WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Capitol Police say a Florida man was detained a block from the Capitol after landing an open-air aircraft which sported the U.S. Postal Service logo. Officials describe the aircraft as a "gyrocopter." A congressional aide identified the pilot as Doug Hughes, a Florida Postal Service worker. He said on a website that he was delivering letters to Congress to draw attention to campaign finance corruption.

FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez is now a convicted murderer -- and he's begun a life prison term without parole. After 36 hours of deliberations over seven days, jurors in Massachusetts convicted him of first-degree murder in the slaying of Odin Lloyd nearly two years ago. The conviction is automatically appealed to the state's highest court.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police have shot and killed a man after a police chase that started with a suspected traffic violation. The Harris County Sheriff's Office is investigating. A spokesman said that after the chase, two Houston police officers told the suspect to show his hands, but as they approached his car he reached back into his vehicle. Suspecting that he was reaching for a weapon, both officers opened fire multiple times, killing the man.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago City Council has settled the case of a teenager who died after being shot 16 times by a police officer. The shooting, captured by a dashboard camera, is still being investigated by country and federal prosecutors. The unidentified officer is on desk duty and the city has declined to release the video. The family of Laquan McDonald will receive a $5 million settlement.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in December is easing. California health officials say the outbreak will be considered over in the state on Friday if there aren't new cases. The outbreak reignited debate about vaccinations. Many of those infected were not immunized. Infections spread beyond California to several other states and countries.
