PANAMA CITY (AP) — The post handshake expectations are higher this time following the greeting between President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro at the Summit of the Americas. They had shaken hands once before, but Friday's acknowledgement is the first since Obama's decision in December to begin talks on restoring relations with Cuba that were severed in 1961. Obama is looking to the summit to chart a less conflictive future with Latin America.

TRENTON, S.C (AP) — Authorities say there have been some 30 evacuations following a South Carolina train derailment. Officials say one of the Norfolk Southern tankers was carrying anhydrous ammonia and the car immediately behind that derailed tanker was carrying ammonia nitrate. A hazmat team headed to the site. Officials say no one has been injured.

NEW YORK (AP) — Authorities say a car left running in an attached garage emitted deadly carbon monoxide fumes that filled a residence, killing four elderly people. The bodies were discovered when a relative of one couple went to check on them because they hadn't answered the phone at their Queens home. One man was found next to the running car in the garage.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A deadly bird flu strain appears to be spreading among commercial turkey farms. The strain was confirmed Friday at one North Dakota turkey farm and at four more in Minnesota. That raises the number of farms affected across the Midwest to 20 and the toll to almost 1.1 million birds since the outbreak was first confirmed in early March. Officials in both states said those turkeys not killed by the virus will be euthanized to prevent the disease from spreading.

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Gunmen in restive western Pakistan shot and killed at least 20 workers early Saturday at a dam construction site, the deadliest recent attack targeting civilians in a region facing a low-level insurgency. Authorities say the violence is in Baluchistan province, a region where nationalist and separatist Baluch groups have fought against the Islamabad-based government for years.
