BERKELEY, Mo. (AP) — There are violent protests once again in suburban St. Louis after another fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer. The shooting happened last night at a convenience store in Berkeley, Missouri. That's just a few miles from Ferguson -- where Michael Brown was killed by a white officer in August. Police say they were called about a theft last night -- and as the officer questioned two men, one pointed a gun at him. The officer fired three shots, and one hit the gunman.
BERLELEY, Mo. (AP) — Four people have been arrested in the latest unrest to follow a police shooting. Authorities in suburban St. Louis also say two police officers were injured in the protest in Berkeley, Missouri. Police cars were damaged, and a fire was set at a QuikTrip store.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are slightly higher a day after the Dow Jones industrial average closed above 18,000 for the first time. Trading will close early today ahead of the Christmas holiday. Traders were encouraged by the latest positive news on the U.S. economy. The government reported before the market opened that the number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits is the lowest it's been in almost two months. That's a good sign for the job market.
BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — Christian pilgrims from around the world have begun to gather in the biblical town of Bethlehem for Christmas Eve celebrations at the traditional birthplace of Jesus. On a crisp, sunny day, thousands of people crowded into Manger Square, stopping in restaurants and admiring the town's Christmas tree. Marching bands and scout troops are entertaining the visitors. The celebrations are bringing a lift to an area after a difficult year. Israeli-Palestinian peace talks collapsed last spring, and Israel battled Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip during a 50-day war over the summer.
LONDON (AP) — North Korea's Internet service -- what there is of it -- has suffered at least seven outages in the last 48 hours, according to one monitor of Web traffic. Some are talking about the possibility of a retaliatory cyber-attack by the United States, which holds the North responsible for the hacking attack on Sony Pictures. But security experts say even amateurs -- or a simple glitch -- could have brought down North Korea's Internet service.
