PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) — Adam Scott ran off four straight birdies in the middle of his round of 6-under 65 to gain a share of the 36-hole lead with Cameron Tringale at The Barclays, the opening event of the PGA Tour playoffs. Three dozen players were within five shots of the lead, a group that includes British Open and PGA champion Rory McIlroy, who roared into contention with a 65.

OAKLAND (AP) — The top two teams in the American League West are squaring off tonight in Oakland as the Athletics entertain the Angels. Coming into play, first-place Los Angeles tops the A's by two games. Los Angeles has won four straight and eight of 10, while the A's have dropped eight of their last 10.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two of the top teams in the National League are in Washington this evening where the home-standing Nationals are trying for their team-record 11th straight victory. The Nationals, who lead the NL East by seven games over Atlanta, are leading San Francisco 1-0 in the early going.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals is one of four pitchers with 15 wins this season. Tonight he can break the logjam as he goes for win No. 16 in Philadelphia against the Phillies. Wainwright is 15-7 on the year with an earned run average of 2.40.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks have re-signed backup guard Shelvin Mack, who general manager Danny Ferry says proved to be a good fit for coach Mike Budenholzer's system. Mack averaged 7.5 points and ranked second on the team with 3.7 assists per game. He played in 73 games, including 11 starts, and ranked seventh in the NBA with his average of 3.04 assists per turnover.
