BAGHDAD (AP) — Sunni insurgents are pressing on with their offensive in one of Iraq's most restive regions. Officials say the militants captured two border crossings on Sunday, one along the frontier with Jordan and the other with Syria. The takeovers have dealt Iraq's Shiite prime minister another blow and brought the war to the doorstep of Jordan, a key U.S. ally that also borders Syria.
BAGHDAD (AP) — Officials say twin explosions targeted the funeral for an Iraqi army general in Anbar province on Sunday, killing eight and injuring 13. They say a suicide bomber first detonated his explosives at the hall where the funeral was being held. Two minutes later, a car bomb went off as the mourners were fleeing. SEATTLE (AP) — Mount Rainier National Park says it will be up to the Pierce County, Washington, medical examiner to confirm that the body found this afternoon is that of 70-year-old outdoors writer Karen Sykes of Seattle. Sykes has been missing on the mountain since Wednesday. That's when she separated from her hiking partner.
FORT IRWIN, Calif. (AP) — A soldier has died during a training exercise in Southern California. The Army says Pfc. Andrew Sass of Fremont, North Carolina, was killed Saturday at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin. The 23-year-old soldier was assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord near Seattle. Sass enlisted in May 2013 and had not served overseas.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Former Attorney General and former Pennsylvania Gov. Dick Thornburgh is hospitalized in Pittsburgh after suffering a mild stroke. His wife Ginny Thornburgh tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review he was stricken yesterday at their weekend home in Ligonier. She says a doctor told her that her 81-year-old husband "will do well from a recovery point of view."
