WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say an alleged leader of the deadly 2012 attacks on Americans in Benghazi, Libya, has been seized by special forces in Libya and put on an American warship in the Mediterranean Sea. Ahmed Abu Khattala (hah-TAH'-lah) will be tried in the U.S. on terrorism charges. He was captured Sunday. Administration critics say he should be interrogated at the U.S. detention center in Cuba.
ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani intelligence officials say a U.S. drone strike in northwestern Pakistan has killed four men in a militant hideout near the Afghan border. North Waziristan is home to a mix of local and foreign al-Qaida-linked militant groups, who also attack American and NATO troops across the border in Afghanistan. The strike was the third in the past two weeks.
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say President Barack Obama is not expected to approve imminent airstrikes in Iraq. One reason is that there are few clear targets that impede a blitz by Sunni extremists that is taking towns and territory. The president will brief top congressional leaders on the matter at the White House on Wednesday.
BOSTON (AP) — Lawyers for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) are due in court today along with federal prosecutors for a status conference. Defense attorneys are expected to formally file a motion to move his trial from Boston. Authorities say Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, planted two pressure cooker bombs near the finish of the 2013 marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 260.
BONNE TERRE, Mo. (AP) — After being on pause for weeks following a botched execution, executions by lethal injections have been carried out in Georgia and Missouri. In Missouri, a man who shot the mother of two of his children and killed two of her friends was put to death after midnight. And a man convicted of killing a teen neighbor was put to death about an hour earlier in Georgia.
