KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Five American troops have been killed in southern Afghanistan by what appears to have been friendly fire. That's according to a U.S. defense official, who won't provide any other details. An Afghan official says it happened yesterday in southern Zabul province. It's one of the worst such incidents in the nearly 14-year war.

BAGHDAD (AP) — Iraq's second-largest city -- Mosul -- has been overrun by militants who have seized control of provincial headquarters and other key buildings. Gunmen burned police stations and freed detainees. Security forces have fled their posts. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has called for a state of emergency.

SEATTLE (AP) — Prosecutors are expected to file charges today against the man accused of a shooting rampage at a small university in Seattle. Aaron Ybarra (ee-BAHR'-uh) is accused of killing a student and wounding two others at Seattle Pacific University. His lawyer says he has a long history of mental problems. Ybarra is being held without bail and is on suicide watch.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton says she rejected an effort by the Obama campaign to go on the attack against Sarah Palin after Palin was nominated as the 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate. Clinton told NBC that she told the campaign that she wouldn't do it just because Palin was a woman and that there would be plenty of time to draw distinctions. Clinton is conducting a series of interviews to promote her book.

LONDON (AP) — Actress and U.N. envoy Angelina Jolie and British Foreign Secretary William Hague have opened a four-day international summit to focus attention on rape of women in war zones and conflict areas. One goal of the gathering is to identify ways to better investigate and prosecute cases of sexual violence and provide support for women and girls.
