CEDAR CITY — Gunnison provided one of the greatest endings of the high school basketball season in the 2A semifinals but they ran out of magic in the championship game.

The Bulldogs were defeated by No. 1 Wasatch Academy 57-45.

Cody John led Wasatch Academy in scoring with 19 points giving the private school in Mt. Pleasant their first state title.

The Tigers shot 46 percent from the field while holding Gunnison to just 37 percent shooting.

Gunnison's Colby Caldwell hit a last-second 3-pointer as Gunnison defeated Emery in the semifinals. They competed with the tournament favorite Wasatch Academy playing them even in the 2nd half but couldn't overcome a 9-point halftime deficit. It was Gunnison's first appearance in the state championship game since they won the title in 1999.

Wasatch Academy's Geno Luzcando was named tournament MVP by the Deseret News.
