When I dine out with my vegetarian friends, sometimes it’s a little tricky to settle on a restaurant. I don’t want to necessarily eat a dinner of tofu and tempeh, and my vegetable eater pals don’t always want to eat pasta or Portobello mushroom burgers, which seem to be the default vegetarian options at most restaurants.
Well, I recently discovered a casual, laid-back restaurant in Sugarhouse where vegetarians and meat eaters can both be happy. It’s called the Singing Cricket Café. At the Singing Cricket chef and owner Lara Kierstead caters to vegetarians and vegans with dishes like wild mushroom and vegetable lasagna rolls, spinach and ricotta raviolis with red pepper cream sauce, and chile relleno casserole with brown cilantro rice.
But then for us carnivores, there are also options at the Singing Cricket like their scrumptious roast beef and Swiss Wellington appetizers in puff pastry or a grilled New York steak marinated with garlic and rosemary and served with herb-roasted Yukon Gold potatoes and broccoli.
And then for all you Atkins and South Beach Diet folks, there are also low-carb choices at the Singing Cricket such as lemon chicken scallopine with capers and artichoke hearts, or blackened salmon with lemon basil oil. By the way, they didn’t forget about the kids either: The Singing Cricket Café has a kids menu featuring stuff like grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers and chips, and a cheese quesadilla.
