OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Weber State hired Randy Rahe to replace Joe Cravens as basketball coach, the school announced Thursday.

Rahe has been an assistant coach at Utah for the past two years. Before that, he was an assistant at Utah State.

"The key is recruiting good players, good students and quality people; that's the formula for success, and that is what I plan to bring to Weber State University," Rahe said in a statement.

Weber State announced last month that Cravens would be relieved of his coaching duties after two consecutive losing seasons. Cravens would serve out the remaining two years left on his contract performing other duties in the athletics department, the school announced. Cravens was named head coach in 1999.

Rahe's first year at Utah the Utes went 29-6, reached the NCAA tournament Sweet 16 and were ranked 14th in the nation.

During his six seasons with the Aggies, Rahe served as the defensive coordinator. His duties included recruiting, scouting, game preparation and scheduling. From 1998-2004, the Aggies compiled a 143-48 record, earned three NCAA tournament berths and won five Big West Conference championships.

Rahe spent seven seasons as an assistant at Colorado State and also served as an assistant at Denver, Colorado and Colorado College (1988-1989).

Weber State lost its final four games this season to finish with a 10-17 record (4-10 Big Sky) and failed to qualify for the conference tournament for the first time since 1981.
