LONDON, Oct 2, 2005 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The female British waistline appears to be disappearing, but different clothing manufacturers offer a variety of waist measurements.

The Department of Trade and Industry surveyed 11,000 people and found the average British woman was a size 16, and her waist went from 27.5 inches to 34 inches in 50 years.

Marks & Spencer introduced roomier sizes after surveying 2,500 women five years ago and found their average size was 14. It created slacks with a waist of 32 inches and hips 42, but at Next the waist 32 inches and hips 36, reported Sunday Telegraph.

Joseph, the designer store, offers size 10 pants with a 29-inch waist and 36-inch hips, but at the Gap the waist is 31 inches and the hips 36, while at Jigsaw the waist is 32, hips 36.

The Telegraph survey of size 10 measurements of pants at different shops had waist sizes from 29 inches to 34 inches and for the hips 34 inches to 42 inches.
