TAYLORSVILLE — Taylorsville hosted its fourth annual "Cart Dart" Saturday. The event is held on the first Saturday in March each year, regardless of the weather, in an effort to foster a sense of community and fun.
This year's race began at Taylorsville City Hall and took participants to various locations around the city to participate in challenges, such as a rubber chicken toss and dance contests.
Participants decorate their carts and typically dress up in costumes as they compete for trophies.
"We are just here to have a good time with our fellow Taylorsville residents and win some prizes," said Lisa Richardson, who participated in the Saturday event.
“We draw a demographic that isn’t your usual fitness enthusiast,” Rhetta McIff, Taylorsville's Neighborhood Services Coordinator and race organizer, said in a news release. “Our racers aren’t there to put on headphones and pound out a few miles, but spend time with friends and enjoy the city as they race. The shopping carts and costumes put you in a completely different mindset.”
Local businesses also take part in the event, which aims to bring people together to benefit the community. Proceeds from the event go toward the local YMCA's Healthy Kids Day, which is an annual event that teaches children and their families about leading healthy lives.
"We are a YMCA Team, and we support the YMCA!" said Cart Dart racer Kristen Courney.
As of Saturday night, KSL had not received word on how much money was raised.
