SANDY — A 78-year-old Sandy man accused of beating his 85-year-old wife, allegedly in an attempt to kill her, was arrested Thursday.
David Walter Clegg was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault.
Police were called Thursday to an apartment near 600 East and 9000 South after a woman was found "in front of her apartment door, bleeding from an assault caused by her husband," according to a police booking affidavit.
The woman had "two large lacerations on the right side of her head" and was "bleeding profusely," the affidavit states.
After being placed in handcuffs, Clegg allegedly said "he tried to kill her by punching her in the face multiple times, knelt down on her chest, strangled her and hit her over the head with a blunt object," according to the affidavit.
A possible motive for the attack was unknown Thursday. The woman was taken to a local hospital. Her condition as of Thursday afternoon was not immediately available.
