PROVO — It's been an exciting and unlikely pregnancy that's gained national attention for one Utah family. Ashley and Tyson Gardner have tripled their family in one delivery and are now the parents of quadruplets.

Around 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon, the Gardner's welcomed their four infant daughters into the world. The girls arrived 12 weeks early, but according to the Gardner's Facebook page, the delivery went smoothly for both mother and babies.

Ashley and her husband Tyson have been trying for the past eight years to have a child. With the help of in-vitro fertilization, the Pleasant Grove couple conceived two sets of identical twins this past summer.

On average, quadruplets are delivered between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. The odds of conceiving two sets of identical twins are about 1 in 70 million, according to Dr. Alan Penzias, associate professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive biology at Harvard Medical School.

Indie, Esme, Scarlett and Evangeline Gardner were born by Caesarean section at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. The decision to deliver the quads was made after doctors discovered that Ashley had ruptured some membranes and her contractions continued to progress in intensity, a family member posted on the Quad Squad Facebook page.

Three of the baby girls weighed a little more than two pounds at delivery, while the fourth weighed slightly less than two pounds. All of the sisters are said to have dark hair.

Tyson and Ashley say they are "overwhelmed with joy" at the safe and healthy arrival of their four daughters and want to thank everyone for their prayers and support through the delivery.

The Gardners will be part of a new TLC series about first time parents and their newborns. The network has been working with the Ashley and Tyson to capture their pregnancy and the birth of their daughters. The show is set to air late next year.
