SALT LAKE CITY — The Discovery Gateway: The Children’s Museum of Utah reported a break-in that allegedly took place sometime after 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan 26.

Museum Development and External Relations Director Krista Albert said when museum employees arrived Monday morning, they found shattered glass outside the administrative offices and called the police.

"Workers recognized immediately that the police needed to be called and so no one went into the offices when we discovered the break-in," Albert said.

Albert said the supposed theives must have gained access to the museum through the administrative offices. She said the museum does not immediately suspect any current or former empoyees, but that administrators are interviewing anyone who may have had access or knoweledge of the safe.

"It is unlikely that someone who didn't have previous knowledge of where that safe would have been located could have found it," Albert said.

Albert said the safe was in a room out of sight from museum patrons located at an undisclosed location on the main level.

She said she hopes by sharing the information, someone in the public will come forward with leads to help police with their investigation. According to estimates based on average weekend revenue, Albert said a substantial amount of money must have been in the safe Sunday night.

"From Friday to Sunday night we have more than 2,500 patrons, so as you can imiagine it is a significant amount of money," Albert said. "All the money that is made over the weekend is in that safe. It was more than $1,000."

The museum is asking for the public’s help in identifying the alleged thieves through photos obtained via secutiry cameras. Anyone with information should call the Salt Lake City Police Department at 801-799-3000.
