SALT LAKE CITY — A Magna man has been found guilty of murder in a gang-related shooting when he was 17 years old.
Joe Perez, now 19, was found guilty on all counts at the end of a three-day jury trial Thursday.
Perez was charged as an adult in June 2015 with murder, a first-degree felony, in the death of 40-year-old Carlos Martinez. He also faced one count of obstruction of justice, a second-degree felony, and eight counts of illegal discharge of a firearm, two of which were first-degree felonies and six of which were second-degree felonies.
Police say Perez and another man got into an argument with Martinez on May 4, 2014, about "gang representation" in the area. Perez got a ride back to the neighborhood later in the day with Skyler Burnasconi, then 18, to Martinez's Magna home at 3807 S. Armoridge Lane (8180 West), according to police.
