TAYLORSVILLE — American Express is laying off as many as 170 employees in Utah, a company spokesman confirmed Tuesday.
The layoffs affects employees at the American Express customer service center in Taylorsville, 4315 S. 2700 West, according to company spokesman Dan Clayton.
Anywhere from 150 to 170 positions will be eliminated "in order to lower costs and increase efficiency," Clayton said.
"Many employees whose positions are affected will be eligible to remain with us in our growing team of home-based service professionals," he said in an email. "Displaced employees who do not take a new position within the company will be eligible for separation pay, outplacement assistance, and options for continuation of some benefits."
Clayton said those whose positions will be eliminated are customer service employees who work with clients over the phone.
