SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz has endorsed Utah Gov. Gary Herbert in his re-election effort.

The Texas senator said Wednesday that the governor has been a principled leader since he took office in 2009. Cruz also says the Republican governor has successfully pushed back against the federal government and defended state power.

Herbert will battle for the Republican nomination, facing off against major Republican challenger Jonathan Johnson.

Herbert announced his endorsement of Cruz last month, saying he's the party's best chance to topple front-runner Donald Trump.

Cruz won Utah's Republican presidential caucus last month after beating Trump by a wide margin.
