BRIGHAM CITY, Utah (AP) — A man who died in a Utah jail cell last month was there for not paying a bill.
The Standard-Examiner reports that 45-year-old Rex Iverson died in a Box Elder County Jail holding cell on Jan. 23. A sheriff's deputy arrested the Bear River City man for not paying a 2013 ambulance bill and ignoring orders to appear in court.
The sheriff's office says Iverson died while jailers were elsewhere in the jail preparing for the booking process. The death is under investigation by the Northern Utah Critical Incident Investigative Team, but foul play is not suspected.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Dale Ward says deputies try never to arrest people on civil warrants but were unable to resolve Iverson's case any other way.
