GREEN RIVER STATE PARK — Located about 45 minutes from Moab, Green River State Park offers a variety of family activities and will be hosting its first disc golf tournament on its new course in November.

Green River State Park was established as a state park in 1965 and was named after the Green River that runs along it, according to the state park website. The park manages the Green River Golf Course, a challenging nine-hole course that often stays open through the winter, according to park manager Aaron Farmer.

In May, a championship level, 18-hole disc golf course was added to the Green River Golf Course, and the first tournament will be held in November. Farmer said the golf course has equipment and carts available to rent for golf and disc golf.

In addition to golf and disc golf, here are several other activities that Green River State Park has to offer:

Camping

The park has 40 campsites, 36 of which have electrical hookups for RVs. Farmer said the park is currently in the process of adding water hookups to all of the sites. The campground also has restrooms, showers and flush toilets.

A cabin is also available for rent. It sleeps six people and offers electricity with a refrigerator, microwave and heat. It is open year-round.

River rafting

Due to its proximity to the Green River, the park is a popular launching point for river-rafting trips, Farmer said. It is the put-in point for the 120-mile float through Labyrinth and Stillwater Canyons, a good rafting trip for beginner and intermediate boaters. Farmer said the trip typically takes between two to three days.

People can take a commercially guided trip or get a permit and float the river themselves, Farmer said. Permits can be purchased online or at the park. Kayaking is also very popular in the Green River.

Melon Days Festival ===================

Although it's not held in the state park, the 109th annual Melon Days Festival will be held in the nearby city of Green River and is a popular attraction in the fall, Farmer said.

"Green River is famous for its melons," he said.

The festival will be held Sept. 18-19 and will include a parade and several family activities throughout the weekend.
