On showing your appreciation to veterans:

Pete A.

"As I was preparing to deploy to Iraq a few years ago, a concrete project that I was working on in my driveway fell behind schedule due to weather and other priorities.

"I felt bad that I couldn't finish it before I left, so I had resolved myself to completing it while home on my mid-tour leave. To my amazement, a neighbor of mine stepped in and made arrangements to have the driveway project completed just weeks after I had deployed.

"My wife was extremely grateful to have the eyesore finished, and every attempt she made to settle the bill was met with 'I will work it out with your husband when he returns.' The day I came home on leave from Iraq, I went over to my neighbor's to thank him and to pay for the work but he refused to accept any payment. This gesture was far too generous and despite all my efforts he insisted that this was the least he could do to thank me for my service.

"I am humbled by his kindness and can't get over the fact that I will always be in his dept regardless how many more times I have deployed since then. The concrete work was one thing, but what really touched my heart was his willingness to do something that my family couldn't do without me. That single act of service gave me the comfort to know that my family was in great hands while I was at war.

"I appreciate beyond measure the gratitude and the support my neighbor and many like him have expressed to this generation of veterans."

On making up the difference:

Laura

"I was at Costco and had to put some things back. As I was lost in the thought that I couldn't get a lot of the food I wanted, a couple behind me helped pay for the rest of my food! I am so grateful there are nice people out there. Thank you, sweet lady — you made my entire year!"

On comforting the hurt:

James H.

"In 1992, I was in a motorcycle accident. A young woman pulled out in front of me while making a left turn. When I broadsided her car, I catapulted 20 feet and landed in the median.

"I don't remember much, but one thing I remember with complete clarity was a woman who stayed with me, crouched down holding my hand. Her words soothed me and kept me from going into shock.

"When the paramedics arrived, she got to her feet and left. Nobody could tell me who she was or where she'd gone.

"I'll always remember that kind angel."

On being honest:

Geri B.

"A few days ago I was sitting in my car at a red light and noticed an older gentleman coming out of an ATM booth and a second gentleman going in. The second man quickly came back out and called to the older man waving the money that had just been withdrawn but left in the machine. They laughed together and both went their separate ways, but my heart was touched by the honesty of the second man."
