SALT LAKE CITY — A weekend shooting that left one man injured with a gunshot wound to his head during an apparent gang dispute was witnessed by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper.

The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. Sunday near Club California, 51 E. 900 South.

Alex Giron, who goes by the moniker Lil C-Boy, got into a fight inside the club which carried over into the parking lot, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. During the confrontation, Giron pulled out a gun and shot a man once in the head, the report states. The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition but was expected to survive.

A trooper who happened to be in the area witnessed the shooting and confronted Giron, 23, and Eliodoro Sanchez, 23, at gunpoint but both men ran off, according to the report.

Backup officers swarmed the area and caught both men. A handgun that was determined to be stolen was also recovered.

Giron was arrested for investigation of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault for allegedly pointing his gun at others during the fight, being a restricted person in possession of a firearm, theft of a firearm, discharge of a firearm, use of a firearm during a fight and evidence tampering.

Sanchez was arrested for investigation of aggravated assault and failing to stop at the command of police.

Giron was convicted of riot in 2011, a third-degree felony, and had a charge of retaliation against a witness dismissed. Giron and others assaulted a man for allegedly being a "snitch." He was sentenced to up to five years at the Utah State Prison.
