SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love will formally announce her bid for Utah's 4th Congressional District seat Thursday.

Love, a Republican, will make the announcement at Saratoga Shores Elementary School.

“As a wife and mother of three children, I believe the best hope for our future is to focus on fiscal discipline, limited government and personal responsibility. These three core principles drive economic growth and opportunity,” she said.

Love, 36, enters an already crowded GOP field including high-profile candidates state Rep. Stephen Sandstrom and former state Rep. Carl Wimmer, along with lawyer Jay Cobb. And there's also an incumbent to contend with since Democratic Congressman Jim Matheson decided to jump from the 2nd District to the 4th District.

My policy decisions have and always will be based on conservative beliefs, not on the current political trends.

–Mia Love

A Deseret News/KSL-TV poll last month showed Love running behind Sandstrom and Wimmer among Republicans. She also trails Matheson by 17 percentage points in a head-to- head matchup, the poll shows.

Love would be the first African-American to represent Utah in Congress should she win the November election.

The first-term mayor manages one of Utah’s fastest growing cities where she has cut spending but maintained service levels.

“My policy decisions have and always will be based on conservative beliefs, not on the current political trends,” she said.
