AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas has suspended sophomore wide receiver DeAndre McNeal for an unspecified violation of team rules.

A school spokesman said McNeal was suspended but provided no details Wednesday and it was unclear if and when he will be allowed to return. The Longhorns report for the 2016 season on Friday.

McNeal was rated as one of the top athlete recruits in the country coming out of high school in 2014, but struggled last season to make his mark as Texas went just 5-7. McNeal played in 10 games in 2015 with one rush for nine yards. He also had one special teams tackle.

Texas opens the season Sept. 4 against Notre Dame.
