FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A judge has ordered a team owner in a summer baseball league to pay $2.9 million in damages for his part in a boycott that brought down the Texas league.
The judgment against Fred "Britt" Britton of Colleyville involved a 2007 boycott with several other team owners that brought down the Texas Collegiate Baseball League. A statement issued by league attorneys Tuesday says the verdict came after a weeklong trial and that pretrial settlements were reached with the other owners.
More than 150 league players were draft by Major League Baseball teams during the four years the Texas Collegiate Baseball League operated. Among them were future stars Hunter Pence of the San Francisco Giants, Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles and Clay Buchholz of the Boston Red Sox.
