Olympic update...Mets lose to Arizona...Roy quits in Denver

RIO DE JENEIRO (AP) — Katie Ledecky continues to blow away the opposition. In the preliminaries of the 800-meter freestyle today she set an Olympic record with a 16-lap time of in 8 minutes, 12.86 seconds, bettering the old mark of 8:14.10 set eight years ago. Ledecky, whose time was nearly seven seconds faster than anyone else, is back in the pool tonight for more qualifying.

RIO DE JENEIRO (AP) — Madison Keys and Steve Johnson are the final Americans left in the Olympic tennis tournament. Keys, the seventh seed, has advanced to the semifinals while Johnson is in the quarterfinals. Also advancing to the men's quarterfinals today was 14-time major winner Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL').

NEW YORK (AP) — Arizona scored six times in the fifth inning to blow out the Mets this afternoon 9-0. The victory completed a three-game sweep of the New Yorkers. The Diamondbacks ran all over the Mets with 13 stolen bases in the series.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Baltimore's Chris Tillman is going for his 15th win of the season this afternoon in Oakland. Tillman is closing in on his career high of 16 victories, set in 2013. With a win the Orioles would pick up a half-game on first-place Toronto in the American League East as the Blue Jays have the day off.

UNDATED (AP) — In a surprising move, Patrick Roy (wah) has resigned as coach and vice president of hockey operations of the Colorado Avalanche. The move apparently caught the team off-guard as there was no mention of it on its website. The Hall of Fame goaltender cited his vision and that of the organization not being in sync.
