TORONTO (AP) — Toronto has signed the NHL No. 1 overall draft pick, Auston Matthews, to a three-year, entry-level contract. General manager Lou Lamoriello typically refuses to give bonuses to rookies, but agent Pat Brisson confirmed that Matthews' deal includes the maximum entry-level salary of $925,000 per year as well as bonuses. The 18-year-old had 24 goals and 22 assists in 36 games playing in Switzerland.

WASHINGTON (AP) —The Kansas City Royals were welcomed to the White House by President Barak Obama today to celebrate their World Series title from last season. He described them as "one of the "grittiest, most complete teams we've seen in a long time."

MADRID (AP) — Center Marc Gasol (guh-SAWL') will not play for defending silver medalist Spain in the Rio Olympics after failing to recover from a broken foot in time. Gasol has not played since he broke his right foot in February while playing for the Memphis Grizzlies.

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) — Woody Austin birdied four of the last eight holes on the way to a 4-under 68 and the first-round lead at the Senior British Open at Carnoustie. Seven golfers are just a shot off the pace, including former British Open champ Mark O'Meara.

MEGEVE, France (AP) — Chris Froome has all but locked up a successful defense of his Tour de France title with a win in today's mountain time trial 18th stage. The British rider widened his lead to 3 minutes, 52 seconds with just three stages to go.
