UNDATED (AP) — BYU might just have gone from the most precarious of positions on the NCAA Tournament bubble to a near-lock in one memorable night, thanks to one spectacular performance against second-ranked Gonzaga. The Cougars (23-7) were trending in the right direction anyway, winning seven straight heading into their match-up with the Bulldogs. But the show they put on with a 91-78 victory Saturday night, long after folks on the East Coast probably went to bed, was exactly the kind of game BYU coach Mark Pope had been hoping to see as March drew near.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Luther Muhammad scored 22 points and No. 25 Ohio State beat No. 7 Maryland 79-72, snapping the Terrapins' nine-game winning streak. Ohio State defeated a Top-10 team for the fourth time this season. Four other Buckeyes scored in double figures, led by Kaleb Wesson with 15 points. Duane Washington Jr. added 13, while Andre Wesson and C.J. Jackson each had 12. Aaron Wiggins led Maryland with 20 points and Eric Ayala had 16, but the Terrapins got little help from their big guns. Jalen Smith and Anthony Cowan were held well below their season averages, with Cowan scoring 10 points and Smith finishing with eight.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Al Durham scored 14 points and Trayce Jackson-Davis had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Indiana to a 68-60 victory over No. 9 Penn State. Devonte Green contributed 10 points for the Hoosiers. Indiana made its final four free throws to help seal the win. Lamar Stevens led Penn State with 29 points. He was plagued with foul trouble all game.
EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Daniel Oturu had 22 points and 12 rebounds and Minnesota beat Northwestern 83-57. Marcus Carr added 18 points and Gabe Kalscheur and Payton Willis had 14 apiece for the Gophers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Pete Nance led last-place Northwestern with 11 points. Ryan Young added 10 points for the Wildcats, who have lost 11 straight. Oturu, one of the top big men in the Big Ten, blocked three shots and shot 3 for 5 from 3-point range in addition to his 15th double-double.
MADISON, Wisc. (AP) — Micah Potter came off the bench to score 18 points with nine rebounds and helped Wisconsin beat Rutgers 79-71. Nate Reuvers and Brevin Pritzl added 17 apiece for Wisconsin, while Ron Harper Jr. led the Scarlet Knights with 21 points and nine rebounds. The Badgers were hot from distance, hitting 10 of their first 20 from behind the 3-point line as they built a comfortable lead. But Rutgers continued to pound the ball inside, where the Scarlet Knights had a 42-16 advantage in the paint and refused to go away.
